3. Windows Architecture and Runtime Specifics

Windows handles processes, resources, and credentials differently from POSIX systems. Zenborg adapts to these differences automatically.

Process Lifecycle and Tree Cleanup

When stopping or cancelling a loop stage on Windows, child processes (such as Node.js test runners, Git commands, and compiler daemons) cannot be stopped with standard POSIX signals.

Zenborg terminates process trees cleanly on Windows using:

taskkill /T /F /PID <pid>

This command stops the parent agent process and all child workers, preventing orphaned processes from consuming CPU or RAM in the background.

System Load-Gating on Windows

On macOS and Linux, Zenborg monitors 1-minute, 5-minute, and 15-minute system load averages using os.loadavg().

On Windows, os.loadavg() always returns [0, 0, 0]. To protect your computer from overload:

  • Zenborg bypasses CPU load checks on Windows.
  • The engine relies strictly on system free memory percentages.
  • The default limit is MIN_SYSTEM_FREE_PERCENT = 8. If available RAM drops below 8%, Zenborg pauses queue dispatching until memory frees up.

Credential Storage

On Windows systems without hardware keyring integration, Zenborg saves encrypted credentials in the user profile directory using restricted file permissions (mode 0600), accessible only by the current Windows user account.
